Southeast Nebraska farmers sold an average of $2.6 billion in food commodities annually during three decades, however 34% of farms still operated at a loss in 2022.
Much of what is earned exits the region through spending on externally sourced inputs like equipment and fuel. While the region excels at producing livestock feed, southeast Nebraska would benefit from improvements to the food system infrastructure that keeps produce local.
The Local Farm & Food Economy regional report for Southeast Nebraska covers Cass, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline, Seward, Thayer, and York counties and calls attention to the need for reinvestment in those systems that nourish both the economy and residents.
This regional report was written by Ken Meter of Crossroads Resource Center and published for the Center for Rural Affairs and Heartland Regional Food Business Center.
